There used to be a paper on every corner. A person at a desk knew your grandmother's name. The paper was not prestigious. It was useful. It told you when the road was closing, who was running for the seat, what the school board actually voted on. It made a place legible to the people who lived there.

That paper is mostly gone. The presses are still there but the desk is empty. The information is everywhere now and the common ground is nowhere. The cost of being a citizen — of showing up, of knowing enough to show up well, of having a place to disagree in writing — has gone up, and the tools to do it have been replaced with feeds.

This is the thing being rebuilt here. Not a feed. Not a homepage for an algorithm. A small newspaper, written from the ground it stands on, posted to the people who live on that ground.

What the name means, in three concentric senses.

Hence means from this place. The paper is local in the old sense: not networked-around, but written from where the reporter stands. The work has a ground.

Hence means for this reason. The paper advances an argument. It is not neutral the way water is wet. It is honest the way a witness is honest: it tells you what it saw and why it saw it that way.

Hence means from this point forward. A newspaper is not a magazine. It runs on a clock. What is true today may not be true tomorrow, and the work is to record what is true today so that the record is there when it matters.

Three senses. One name. One paper.

The work that will be done in this paper is being built one piece at a time, the way you build a thing you want to last. The first pieces will be position papers and investigations. Then a calendar. Then a way to write back. The pieces are not all here yet. They will show up when they are ready.
